Privacy Policy

Tanken is a self-guided walking-trail app made by Curiosidad Pte. Ltd. in Singapore. This policy explains, in plain terms, what personal data we collect across the Tanken app and this website, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. We collect only what we need to run the trails. We do not sell your data, and you can ask us to access or delete it at any time by writing to [email protected].

1. Who we are

Tanken is operated by Curiosidad Pte. Ltd. (“Curiosidad”, “we”, “us”, “our”), a company based in Singapore. Curiosidad is responsible for the personal data described here (the data controller, under the laws that use that term). This policy covers the Tanken mobile app (iOS and Android) and the website at tanken.sg. It does not cover third-party services we link to, which have their own policies.

2. What we collect, at a glance

The sections that follow explain each of these in more detail:

  • Account details, to create and manage your account.
  • Location, to detect when you reach a point on a trail.
  • Photos, recordings and answers you submit while doing a trail.
  • Usage and diagnostic data, to understand and improve the product.
  • Messages you send us, and confirmation of any purchases you make.

3. Your account and sign-in

To use Tanken you create an account. We collect your email address, and your name if you provide one. You can sign in using a one-time email link, or with Apple, Google or Facebook. When you sign in with one of these providers, it shares basic profile information (such as your name and email address) with us so that we can create your account. We use this data to provide the app and your account, which is our basis for processing it under a contract with you.

4. Location data

Trails work by noticing when you arrive at a point. To do this, the app needs access to your device location while you are using it. Your device asks for your permission first, and most of the proximity detection happens on your device. We do not track your movements continuously in the background.

You can change or withdraw location permission at any time in your device settings. Some features, such as automatically triggering points as you walk, will not function without it. Where the law requires it, we rely on your consent for location access.

5. Health and fitness data (Apple Health)

If you use Tanken on an Apple Watch, the app can record your walk as a workout using Apple Health. With your permission, it reads workout measurements — walking distance, active energy and heart rate — while you walk, and saves your completed trail to Apple Health as a single walking workout. This keeps the map active for the whole walk and lets your walk count towards your activity.

This health and fitness data stays on your device and in Apple Health. We do not receive it, store it on our servers, or share it with anyone, and it is never used for advertising. You can grant or withdraw this access in the Apple Health app or your device settings at any time; the rest of Tanken works without it.

6. Photos, recordings and answers you submit

Some trail activities invite you to take a photo, record audio, or write an answer. When you submit this content, it is uploaded to and stored on our servers so that we can save your progress and show your submissions back to you. You can delete your submissions, or your whole account, which removes this content (see Your rights).

7. Usage and diagnostic data

We collect events such as which screens you view and which trails you start or complete, together with your device model, operating system, app version and language. We process this in-house on our own infrastructure, associated with your account identifier; the app's analytics are not shared with any third-party analytics provider. We use this information to understand how the product is used, fix problems and improve it, which is our legitimate interest, balanced against your rights.

On our website (tanken.sg) we use Google Analytics (provided by Google) to understand aggregate visitor traffic — for example which pages are viewed and roughly where visitors come from. This is separate from the in-app analytics above and is not linked to your Tanken account. Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser; you can block them through your browser settings.

8. Purchases

If you buy premium content, the payment is processed by the Apple App Store or Google Play. We receive confirmation that a purchase or restore has succeeded, so that we can unlock your content. We do not receive or store your card or bank details.

If you buy through the SG Culture Pass, payment is handled by Pelago, an approved ticketing partner, using your Culture Pass credits. Pelago passes us your booking details, such as your email address and a booking reference, so that we can send your redemption link and unlock Premium on your account. Your Singpass login and credit balance stay with Pelago and the scheme; we do not receive them.

9. Emails and communications

If you contact us through an enquiry form or by email, we keep that correspondence so that we can respond and provide support. If we offer a newsletter or similar updates, we only send them to you if you choose to opt in, and you can unsubscribe at any time.

10. How we share your information

We share personal data only in these circumstances:

  • Service providers that operate parts of the service on our behalf: cloud hosting, website analytics (Google Analytics — the app's analytics are processed in-house, not by a third party), mapping (Mapbox), email delivery, sign-in providers (Apple, Google and Facebook) and app-store payments (Apple and Google). They may use the data only to provide their service to us.
  • Legal and safety purposes: with authorities or others where we are required to by law, or where it is necessary to protect the rights, property or safety of our users, the public or Curiosidad.
  • Business transfers: if Curiosidad is involved in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, personal data may transfer to the successor entity. We will let you know if this happens.

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.

SG Culture Pass surveys and reporting

If you unlocked Tanken with the SG Culture Pass, then after you walk a trail we may email you a short, optional survey about the experience: how satisfied you were, whether it was your first arts or heritage outing, and how many people were in your party. You do not have to answer it.

As an approved partner, we report to the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) on the programme. These reports contain attendance figures and collated survey results. The survey answers we pass on are de-identified: they carry no name, email or account, only the date, the trail, how the walk ended, and your answers. MCCY may share this information with other government agencies in connection with the scheme.

This applies only to participants who used the SG Culture Pass. If you bought Tanken any other way, you will not receive this survey, and nothing about you goes into MCCY reporting.

11. Data retention

We keep personal data only for as long as it is needed for the purposes described in this policy. Account data is kept until you delete your account, after which it is deleted or anonymised, except where we are required to retain certain records for longer by law. Analytics data is retained in limited or aggregated form.

For the SG Culture Pass, we keep booking and attendance records for as long as the scheme requires (currently five years after the programme). We mask the buyer’s email address twelve months after a booking is settled, so the records kept beyond that are de-identified.

12. International transfers

Curiosidad is based in Singapore, and some of our service providers operate in other countries. As a result, your personal data may be processed outside the country in which you live. Where we transfer personal data internationally, we use appropriate safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses, where these are required by law.

13. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you can ask us to give you access to your personal data, correct or delete it, limit or object to how we use it, provide a copy in a portable form, and withdraw any consent you have given.

  • Singapore (PDPA). You may request access to and correction of your personal data, and withdraw consent to its collection, use or disclosure.
  • UK / EEA (GDPR). You have rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability and objection, the right to withdraw consent, and the right to lodge a complaint with your data-protection authority.
  • California (CCPA/CPRA). You have the right to know, delete and correct your personal information, and to opt out of its “sale” or “sharing”, although we do not sell or share your data in that sense. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights, and you may use an authorised agent.

To make a request, contact [email protected]. We may need to verify your identity, and we will respond within the period required by applicable law. To delete your account and all of its data, use the self-service deletion option in the app’s settings.

14. Data security

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal data, including encryption in transit. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we work to protect your information and to address any issues that arise.

15. Children’s privacy

Tanken is not directed to children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. When schools use Tanken with students, the school or teacher determines how the app is used and is responsible for obtaining any consent required for those students. We act on the school’s instructions in respect of that use. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact [email protected] and we will delete it.

16. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will post the revised version on this page and update the “last updated” date above. If the changes are significant, we will give notice within the app or by email.
